Know-how, experience, and skills to counteract the effects of climate change
Nowadays we often hear about "climate change" whose effects often affect the entire planet and, consequently, also our territory. BrianzAcque as the water manager of the Province of MB has an especially important role in finding mitigation measures to these phenomena.
Although climate change has glocal dimensions with different phenomena depending on latitudes and longitudes, ranging from droughts to floods, in Brianza, the most critical issues are noticed to be the result of excessive rainfall taking place quite close to one another in areas located at the foot of hilly areas. When this happens, the run-off water, which often comes from agricultural land, fields, parks, and large private gardens, pours downstream, increasing and causing the public sewers to overflow creating flooding of roads and houses, with a criticality that affects human activities as a whole.
Among the measures to mitigate this phenomenon are the overflow tanks: large "basins" in which the water in excess with respect to the hydraulic disposal capacity of the sewerage system is temporarily stored.
And more, with the violent and frequent cloudbursts that occur invariably during the summer, in July 2020 BrianzAcque set up a permanent round table to jointly tackle flooding and make the areas safe from water damage. A task force has been set up to work together in a synergic and transversal way against the effects of water bombs, comprising water managers, municipalities, the Region, the Province, the ATO, the Civil Protection and the Parks.
Among the various tasks of the task force: the mapping of new critical situations of water flow from each municipality asked to send reports and contributions to BrianzAcque that will act as the collector of all information. At the same time, in reply to requests from the administrations, the water company will implement maintenance and cleaning operations, including those drains that, in the light of the most recent rainfall, have shown greater problems. It will also continue the infrastructural work already underway to contain water, starting with the overflow tank in Bernate, co-financed by the Lombardy Region and that is almost completed.
